Depictions of Christ on the cross exist from the early 5th century (around 420–430 CE), such as the Maskell Passion Ivories in the British Museum and the carved wooden doors of Santa Sabina in Rome. Outside mainstream endorsement: Some 19th-century non-mainstream scholars argued that early Christians avoided portraying Christ on the cross due to the social stigma and shame associated with Roman crucifixion.
